Firm foundations
The
biggest growth area in UK ELT at the moment seems to be foundation year
programmes. This is unsurprising as the number of international
students heading to the UK is increasing and many need not only
academic English but help with other specialist subjects. Russian high
school programmes, for example, finish a year earlier than those in the
UK, which means Russians almost always need a foundation year programme
before they do a degree.

How to get EU funding for short teacher training courses
If you are a teacher in one of the 27 EU member states, a country in the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) or in Turkey you are potentially eligible for funding under the Comenius scheme. Staff already in pre-school to late-secondary education (normally teachers and teacher trainers at primary and secondary level) can apply for funding for in-service training (IST) to attend a teacher refresher course in one of the member states.

Online teacher training materials
What’s available online by way of teacher training materials? Those surveyed include the sort that would be time-savers for trainers, especially those running the internationally recognised Celta or Delta, plus the increasingly popular Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) and Skills for Life (SfL) exams. All materials are freely downloadable to use either as assignments or takeaway task-reading.

Online sources of downloadable Business English materials
There
is a disappointingly small amount of downloadable Business English
material on the internet, and only some of this is free. This article
briefly evaluates a sample of sites offering free downloads that can be
used in the business English classroom.
