Comenius for schools: School Partnerships

Involvement in Comenius provides an achievable and lasting way to engage your school or college in Europe and to reap the benefits internationalism can have on teachers and pupils.

There are two types of Comenius Partnerships: bilateral and multilateral. Bilateral partnerships are open to all secondary and special schools, as well as further education colleges. The partnerships last two years and include a reciprocal exchange, each lasting a minimum of ten days. Students need to be over twelve years old to participate in the exchange.

Multilateral partnerships are cross-curricular projects that involve at least three schools or colleges from at least three European countries. They enable staff and students to work together with partners in other Comenius-eligible countries for the duration of the two-year partnership. Staff and students in nursery,
primary, secondary, special schools and further education colleges are eligible.

Pupils and students also have the possibility of visiting their partner institutions through the funding available. The partnerships can provide a great opportunity for in-service training through mobility activities such as teacher exchanges, head teacher study visits, teacher placements and project meetings. It is desirable that schools and colleges aim to find schools in at least four or five other countries as partners for multilateral partnerships.

How can my school participate?

You will need to find a partner school to work with. You may want to attend a contact seminar, which  is a partner-finding event organised by a National Agency. Seminars are generally arranged around a particular theme e.g. intercultural dialogue or healthy schools, and will include 30+ participants from across Europe who are also looking to find partner institutions,

Once you have found your partner(s) you may wish to set up a preparatory meeting with your partner school before making your application.During a preparatory visit one of the partners acts as the host for planning and discussing their partnership topic.

Deadline for applications is 31 January 2008 (date to be confirmed). Please note that the application form will normally be available two months before the application deadline.

For more information about the programme and to apply contact your local agency. For a list of agencies see here.
