The appearance of a new monolingual learner’s dictionary is always a cause for celebration, and the ninth edition of the popular OALD does not disappoint. This edition contains over 700 new words and phrases, including ‘bestie’ and ‘defriend’. The dictionary is based on the Oxford English Corpus and retains many popular features, including headwords in blue, an extensive picture section and a symbol to show the keywords in the Oxford3000™. The information on language areas such as collocations, phrasal verbs and idioms is helpful.
The accompanying DVD-Rom is a highlight. The familiar feature which allows students to record their voice and self-assess their efforts is very useful for students. The iSpeaker tool includes some lovely pronunciation video clips. Designed for B2–C2 students. Excellent.
