Tony Penston, TP Publications;
This book is aimed at teachers who are unsure of their skills in phonetics. A slim 48-page paperback, it focuses on the ability to recognise and correct errors, especially those which cannot be corrected by ‘listen and repeat’ instruction only. Ten chapters cover consonants, vowels, connected speech, suprasegmentals (e.g. stress and rhythm), intonation and accent. A one-page bibliography lists books which offer further practice. The inclusion of the US vowel chart as well as the British one is interesting; the diagrams of the vocal tract are helpful. The style is concise but often rather informal. Contains some useful teaching tips.
