Focus on Literacy, part of a new series linking research and practice, explores the development of literacy in learners aged 5–18. Five chapters explore two key concepts: communicative competence and ‘language-as-thinking’. The central contention is that by integrating language skills and thinking into meaning-based activities, students will develop their identity in this ever-changing globalised world. The glossary includes the key terms biliteracy and multiliteracies. The section on developing digital literacies is sound but quite short. The focus on young and adolescent learners is quite narrow. Suitable for teachers doing an MA Tesol, a diploma and professional development courses. Worth investigation.
