Pass Trinity Now, GESE Grades 5-6
Laura Clyde and Ray Parker, Black Cat;

This slim 96-page book is an exam preparation course book for the Trinity GESE (Graded Examinations in Spoken English), Grades 5 and 6. It has been revised for the ISE (International Skills in English), level 1. The book includes an exam overview and a diagnostic test. Eight topic-based units cover grammar, functions, phonology and writing.

The Exam Expert sections provide advice and useful practice activities, showing how to create a mind-map on a new topic for the speaking test. Several short ‘Trinity Takeaway’ sections provide model exchanges between examiners and candidates. Overall, this B1 book should prove helpful for test-takers.

New Insight into Ielts, Student’s Book with answers
Vanessa Jakeman and Clare McDowell, CUP;

New Insight into Ielts is an updated version of the book which first appeared in 1991. It is divided into four sections: listening, reading, writing and speaking, allowing users to choose which part of the exam to focus on. It clearly outlines the format for both the general and academic Ielts tests. I think most of the skills and strategies practised, like skimming and scanning, are relevant for all language learners. The book is packed with test tips. Remedial tasks are informed by the Cambridge Learner Corpus. This thorough systematic book can be used for self-study and in class. Recommended.
