It won’t come as a surprise to anyone that English is once again the most studied language by far in the EU. In upper secondary and vocational education it’s 96% and 79% respectively, according to the latest data from Eurostat.
The next most studied foreign language is Spanish (27%), then French (22%), German (21%) and Italian (3%).
It’s also interesting to know that, as of 2020 in the EU, 96.1% of students in primary education were studying at least one foreign language; which rose to 98.4% in lower secondary education and then dropped to 90.3% in upper secondary education.
Meanwhile, 60% of students in upper secondary education study two or more foreign languages. In Luxembourg and France, all students at this level studied two or more foreign languages; in Romania, Finland and Czechia it’s 99%; with Slovakia and Estonia coming in at 98%, Slovenia at 96% and Croatia at 94%.
